As a Humanities teacher, I have noticed a growing challenge with current classroom trends of students using GAI in their work. The research suggests we need to evolve from traditional assignments that could be replicated by GAI and create new human-centered assignments.
I list several assignments designed to prioritize soft skills that GAI cannot replicate, including communication, collaboration, critical thinking and creative thinking. The goal of this graphic is to provide students with a meaningful, authentic learning experience that also incorporates inquiry-based learning methodologies, public exhibition of student work, and challenges students beyond a copy and paste, and to create. This graphic is a solution that serves the following purposes:
- It is a direct response to current research that warns many of our traditional curricular and assessment practices are now too easy for students to complete using GAI.
- The objectives are to build their soft skills and have students thinking beyond a traditional worksheet. It is important to note I am not against GAI being used in education.
- Used in a way that is communicated clearly by the student and they can recognize the contribution of GAI.
- Aligns with student code of conducts including citing sources and not plagiarizing.
- GAI may be a part of the process but ultimately cannot create the final project or present it to the class in an engaging way.
